Gannal discovered the efficacy of solutions of aluminum acetate and chloride for preserving anatomical preparations. His method of embalming involved injection of solutions of aluminum salts into the arteries. Translated into English with notes and additions by R. Harlan as History of Embalming and of preparations in anatomy, pathology, and natural history; including an account of a new process for embalming. (Philadelphia: Judah Dobson, 1840).
