Still founded osteopathy, and opened the first school of osteopathy, now A.T. Still University, in 1892. He was also an early promoter of preventive medicine and the philosophy that physicians should focus on treating the disease rather than just the symptoms. (American-trained osteopathic physicians (D.O.s) are licensed to practice medicine and surgery throughout the U.S., and are recognized in sixty other countries.)
