Black established a system of cavity preparation from which modern techniques have been derived. He constructed a “gnathodynamometer” with which the pressure exerted on the human tooth and therefore on the filling material could be measured. Through experimentation he established an ideal metal mixture which was stable and did not discolor. Publication of his results led to standardization of the alloys.
