Beebe's spectacular work, with 90 colored plates of birds and 88 photogravure plates of habitats and scenery, has been called the greatest ornithological treatise of the 20th century. Illustrators included Henrik Grönvold, Charles Robert Knight, George Edward Lodge, Archibald Thorburn. The edition was limited to 600 copies.
