Publication Details

New York: Baker and Scribner, 1849 CE.

"During this era of rampant sectarianism in medicine, doctors frequently became dishonest or abusive as they competed for patients. To deal with this situation, the American Medical Association adopted [in 1847] a code of professional ethics. Hooker wrote a book-length commentary on this code, Physician and Patient.... Published in 1849, this book was the only comprehensive monograph about medical ethics written by an American during the nineteenth century....Reviewers praised Physician and Patient for its balanced analysis of the ethical responsibilities of both physicians and patients" (Chester Burns in ANB 11, 139-140).
